What's all this about Dionysos ?
Tragic theatre in antiquity

The archaeological educational exhibition entitled "What's all this about Dionysos ?" concerns the tragic theatre in antiquity as it flourishes in the context of the classical city.

This exhibition is based on the principle that the tragic theatre constitutes an aspect of the identity of the democratic city: at the end of the 6th century BC and the beginning of the 5th century BC, the major political and social changes which take place form a new human consciousness. The people of the 5th century BC, who are tried in wars for their freedom, are getting detached from the archaic world.

The democratic city gives birth to the tragedy not as a literary genre but as an institution amongst the other political and juridical institutions. During the theatrical performance, the city brings itself on stage, studies and questions the social reality, describes values, formulates fears, recognises deadlocks and finally experiences its coherence and indicates the right path.
